Information for new Nursing & Midwifery students starting in February 2012
This page provides information for Nursing and Midwifery students starting courses in February and March 2012. If you will be joining us on the PG Diploma in Midwifery programme we will send further information to you shortly.

CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) Check
All new students will be required to complete an enhanced CRB Check. Therefore you must bring with you some specific types of identification to the relevant CRB induction session on to complete this check, if you have not already done so. Ideally you should bring a Passport, Driving License, National Insurance Card and a bank account statement, which is less than three months old and has your current address stated on it. If you cannot provide these, and also for further information, please see our CRB ID information sheet
Occupational Health Form
All new students are required to attend an Occupational Health appointment in the first weeks of the course to ensure you have health clearance to practice. You will be given specific details of your mandatory appointment during your induction.
In preparation for this appointment you will need to have completed an Occupational Health form. If you have not completed this form already, please download the form and return it to the Occupational Health Service immediately at the address on the form.

Bursaries
All new students receive an NHS Bursary to help with your course and living costs. To apply for this please visit the NHS Student Bursaries website and download an application. If you are studying on the Nursing PG Diploma course, please download a 'Non-income Assessed Application' form.
The NHS Student Bursaries also have an official channel on Facebook that you may find useful for general information.
Accommodation
Private Accommodation
If you are looking for private accommodation or are looking to share accommodation you can find further information on the Student Centre Private Housing web pages and you can visit the dedicated City University London Student Pad web page, an online service to find all types of accommodation in the area.
Childcare
City University London does not offer a dedicated childcare service. You will need to arrange your own childcare. There are extra allowances that you can apply for as part of your NHS Bursary towards funding childcare.
Start Date and Induction Weeks
We will be inviting all students to report to Northampton Square on Monday 5 September to complete registration. You will need to go to the University Building at Northampton Square when you arrive and we will confirm the exact time in your Induction schedule.

Annual Leave and Student Year Plans
Diploma/BSc Nursing programmes (Adult/Child)
BSc Midwifery
PG Diploma Nursing (Adult/Child/Mental Health)
As a student on one of the programmes listed above, you are given 7 weeks annual leave during each year of their studies. You will have one week of annual leave during spring (this will not necessarily correspond with the Easter holiday period) as well as four weeks annual leave during the summer. The final two weeks of annual leave will cover the Christmas and New Year period.
All students will be provided with a Student Year plan upon commencing the course.
Attendance
Your programme is full time and you should be available to attend between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Occasionally your classes may finish slightly later than this, up until 7pm.
Practice Hours
The course involves developing an understanding of professional care that reflects the 24-hour, 7-day week nature of the work of a Registered Nurse/Midwife. Therefore you will need to demonstrate the ability to work a variety of shift patterns during practice experience, which will include morning, evening, night and weekend shifts.

How to get here - Maps and Directions
The School of Health Sciences is based at the West Smithfield and Whitechapel sites. Staff and teaching will be based across both of these sites. Some teaching will also take place at the main University site at Northampton Square.
CETL - Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is designed to develop and disseminate good practice and innovation in clinical and communication skills that shifts emphasis from teaching to learning and from teachers to students. Nursing and Midwifery students at City have access to a 'Skills Bus' to practice and enhance clinical placement skills, access to computer based technologies and further learning about patient care in enhanced simulated settings, plus much more. The Centre is based in the Robin Brook Centre at St Bartholomew's Hospital in West Smithfield.
References
All new students are required to have provided us with two adequate references in support of their application. If you have not provided both of these then you will need to do so prior to the start of the course. If you have any issues regarding your references please contact your relevant admissions officer.
Student Centre and Learning Success
The University, including Nursing and Midwifery students, is served by the Student Centre which is based in the University Building at Northampton Square. The Student Centre is there to support the students in all their non-academic needs, with help and advice on issues from finance and accommodation to careers advice through the affiliated Centre for Careers and Skills Development. The Student Centre is also home to Learning Success which provides Academic Learning Support for all students, as well as specialist support for students with Dyslexia and students with mental health issues, and also provides services for students with disabilities. Nursing and Midwifery students also have a dedicated Academic Learning Support Officer who is based at the West Smithfield site. Uniform for Clinical Placements
All students will be provided with a uniform. You will be measured for this at the beginning of the course. You will be provided with three sets of uniform.
Students with religious/cultural considerations will be provided with a uniform that respects this and meets the standards that reflect health and safety legislation and requirements, if you require this option please let us know in advance of the uniform sizing session.
Headdresses are not provided as part of a standard uniform. Trousers may be worn underneath a dress and will be the standard student uniform trousers. Tunics/dresses will be modified from the standard model, loose and shapeless. The tunic/dress will be no longer than mid calf length, with a split seam either side two inches below the knee. The tunic/dress will have slightly longer sleeves; the forearms must be bare. This is essential to prevent soiling and thus transmission of infection.
Personal Tutors
All students will be allocated a personal tutor, along with details in the first weeks of the course of how to contact them. Your personal tutor will provide pastoral care for you during your time as a student.

Timetables
When you start the course you will be able to access your timetables online. You will be guided through this procedure as part of your induction and orientation. It will be important for you to check your timetable online on a regular basis.
