Mathematical Science
City University London's mathematical science degree courses are designed to provide knowledge and skills that are in great demand by employers in both the private and public sector, enabling students to pursue a wide range of careers. The civil service, government agencies, and research establishments require mathematicians, as do large corporations, public utilities and financial companies.
At City we offer five different mathematics based courses, all of which provide an introduction to a wide range of mathematical techniques from pure and applied mathematics, and statistics. A central theme is the development of capacity for solving practical problems, grasping abstract concepts and elaborating logical mathematical arguments.

Why Study at City?
- City has been ranked 10th out 121 University for employment in the Sunday Times University Guide 2011. This good performance extends to mathematics graduates, which have traditionally been very successful at finding employment.
- All our degrees can be extended to MMath degrees which are a four year version of the corresponding three year degree. They also allow for an Industrial Placement between the 2nd and 3rd years.
- All modules in our courses are taught by specialists in the corresponding field. All Mathematics modules are taught by the Centre for Mathematical Science (School of Engineering and Mathematical Science). All Finance and Statistics modules are taught by the Faculty of Actuarial Science (Cass Business School). All Economics modules are taught by the Department of Economics (School of Social Sciences). All Computer Science modules are taught by the School of Informatics. This allows our students to experience a wide range of subjects and to interact with students in other courses.
- We adopt a modern approach to what we teach, relevant to future careers or further study.
- All our students must carry out a final year project to complete their degree. The project involves group working, an oral presentation and an individual interview. It provides our graduates with valuable experience for future careers.
