How to apply

Applications to degree programmes, including those from mature students, must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply through your school or college using the UCAS Apply system which enables you to apply directly through the UCAS website.

Independent applicants such as mature and international students can also use UCAS Apply.   

You can apply to up to five universities on the form. Please take care to enter the correct code for the programme to which you are applying, in particular for subjects with a foundation year and for subjects with BSc and BEng options.

The UCAS code for City University is C60

UCAS has implemented the policy of ‘invisibility of choices’ which means that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each university will only be able to see their entry and not those of the other universities you have chosen. This will ensure that your application for a programme at City University London is considered solely on your own academic and personal qualities.

Your completed application form should be sent to UCAS with the £21 application fee. If you want to apply only to City University London you may make a single-choice application at a reduced rate of £11.

When to apply
Applications for entry in September 2011 should arrive at UCAS between 1 September 2010 and 15 January 2011. Applications that arrive after this date will be considered only at the University’s discretion.

When your application is acknowledged by UCAS you will be sent a personal identification number so that you can access your records via Track on the UCAS website.

What happens next?
UCAS will send your application electronically to City University London where it will be considered by the admissions tutor responsible for selecting students for your chosen programme of study. The admissions tutor will carefully consider your qualifications, personal statement and referee’s report.

You may be invited to an interview or to visit the department. This will vary depending on the programme. Information on the normal selection procedure is given in the programme description. UCAS will notify you of the decision made by the admissions tutor. If you already have your examination results, the department may make you an unconditional offer. If you are currently taking examinations you may receive an offer conditional upon attaining specific results. Once you have received all your offers, you must accept one as your firm choice and one as your insurance.

If you are holding a conditional offer for a programme at City University London and meet the conditions when the examination results are published, you will receive a letter confirming your place, and enrolment information will be posted in September. If you have been studying overseas you should send a copy of your examination results to the Admissions Office as soon as they are available. If you narrowly miss the grades of your offer, your application will be returned to the admissions tutor and you may still be offered a place.

UCAS EXTRA
If you are unsuccessful in obtaining an offer from your first five choices, you may reapply through the scheme using the UCAS EXTRA procedure. Applicants entering EXTRA may refer themselves to an additional or subsequent choices of university/programme using their UCAS web login or by submitting an EXTRA passport. EXTRA is active from March to the end of June.

Clearing
Clearing is the last opportunity for those applicants not holding a place to be considered by programmes declaring vacancies. Clearing takes place in August and information on available places is published in the national press and on the University website.

Deferred entry
You may apply through UCAS to enter a programme in September 2012 and take a year out before coming to university. City University London considers students who wish to defer entry and finds that applicants who thoughtfully plan their year out gain a broader outlook on life that can help them in their studies. You may indicate on the UCAS form that you wish to defer. If you decide to defer after making an application, you must write to the admissions tutor for your programme for approval.

Point of entry
If you have a higher diploma, professional qualification or other non-degree qualification and wish to go on and study a related programme at City University London, it may be possible to enter direct to the second year. You should apply through UCAS and indicate clearly on your form that you wish to be considered for second-year entry. The admissions tutor for the programme will consider whether or not your qualification is equivalent to the first year of study at City University London. Please note that it is not possible to enter the third or final year of a degree programme at City University London.

Transfer from another institution
If you wish to transfer your studies from another university to continue the same programme at City University London, you should apply through UCAS, indicating your chosen point of entry. You should indicate clearly your degree-level subjects and provide a reference from your current institution. You should also contact your local education authority if you are in receipt of an award, to discuss your eligibility for further funding. Please note that Cass Business School and our Law School do not accept transfer applications.
