Aeronautical & Air Transport
Aviation is a fascinating area from the perspectives of both engineering and business. City was the first UK institution to deliver courses in Aeronautics, starting in 1909 ahead of some other illustrious names in the field, and we are proud to have maintained our heritage and reputation for over 100 years.
Aeronautical Engineering is focussed upon the design and manufacture of aircraft; Air Transport Engineering upon the operation, maintenance and airworthiness of aircraft; Air Transport Operations upon the business of aviation. There are of course some areas of overlap, giving all our graduates a rounded introduction to the industry. Most of our programmes can encompass placement years.

Why Study at City?
- Our staff: two thirds of our aeronautics staff have spent significant time in professional practice (industry, MoD, engineering consultancy); we boast an IOSA auditor, a balloonist, a glider pilot, a PPL holder, the Chief Aerodynamicist on the Airbus A380 Programme, a Council member of the Royal Aeronautical Society (the industry's professional body).
- Our facilities: flight deck and motion simulators, wind tunnels up to supersonic speeds, high performance computing, all of which feature in teaching and in student projects; our inspiring flight test course involving hands-on glider manoeuvres and in-flight data measurement.
- Our programmes: aeronautical engineering should be a practical discipline. The first aircraft flew before engineers really understood how wings worked! At City we aim to get the balance right between theory, design and experimentation. Our engineering programmes are accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Our Air Transport Engineering programme is a rarity in the sector but targets graduates at the largest UK employer of aerospace professionals: the airline industry. Our ATOps with ATPL programme engages with a number of high profile flight training organisations. Our highly acclaimed management teaching is delivered by staff with successful businesses of their own.
- Our friends: a host of aviation professionals come through the doors to participate in our world-leading Aviation MSc programmes and to help with the undergraduate teaching.
- Our community: with a manageable cohort size we will know you all individually. Join the City aeronautics family!
