How to apply
Applying for a Course
What are the entry requirements?
Each application is considered on its own merits and is given full consideration by our course directors. The usual minimum entry requirement is a good second class honours degree from a UK university, a recognised equivalent from an accredited overseas institution or an equivalent professional qualification. Entry onto some courses requires a degree in a particular discipline, such as Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Applications from those with strong professional experience in a relevant industry will also be considered for courses like Maritime Operations and Management.
To ensure that students are properly prepared for study and to be sure that students will gain the maximum benefit from the MSc, course directors will also take close consideration of the areas and nature of previous academic and other achievements.
How can I obtain an application form?
Click on the 'How to apply' section of any of the courses or download an application form here.
I can't log back on my online application account. Who can help?
Please email it-servicedesk@city.ac.uk with your full name and date of birth, and the error message when you tried to log on to get the password reset.
What do I need to enclose with my application form?
You should include the following:
- a completed application form, including a concise statement in support of your application,
- your degree certificate and transcript of marks from your first degree (if you do not have your final results at the time of making your application please send a provisional certificate/interim transcript of marks),
- you English language proficiency test result, eg. IELTS or TOEFL (where appropriate),
- two references in support of your application (for a reference form that you can send to your referees please click here),
- a complete or interim transcript of marks is required before any decision can be made on an application.
If you include the contact details of your referees in your online application, they will be sent an automatic request to provide reference letters. Alternatively if you already have copies of your reference letters you can upload them with your online application.
Due to the high number of applications that we receive, sending your application without any/some of the documents listed above may increase the time it takes for a decision to be made regarding your application.
Can I send in my application form even though I have not received my reference letters / English language proficiency test scores?
If you cannot provide your reference letters or English test scores at the time of making your application, we can often consider applications without these documents and make an initial decision ahead of receiving them.
Please note however that any offer of a place made following an initial decision will be conditional subject to receiving satisfactory reference letters and English test scores.
What if I completed my degree some years ago and am not able to obtain an academic reference?
If you completed your degree more than five years ago we realise that it may be more relevant to provide a professional reference from your current or previous employer. In this case you should send two employer references detailing how your professional experience makes you suitable for the course.
Is there a closing date for the receipt of applications?
The closing date for full-time and part-time courses (for entry 2012/13) is 31 August 2012. We recommend applying as early as possible, as competition for places is very high.
When will I know the outcome of my application?
Once we have received your application form and all the required documents you can normally expect to receive a response within three weeks. However it may take up to four weeks during the peak application period of May - September. See above for what you will need to include in your application.
I have been asked to take an English Language Proficiency Test. Do I really need to take the test?
If your degree was in English, rather than your native language or if you have professional experience in an English speaking country/company it may not be necessary to take a test. However, this decision is at the discretion of the course director.
The minimum test scores that we accept for postgraduate study are: TOEFL score of 100 (internet-based), 250 (computer-based), 600 (paper-based) or IELTS 6.5.
