MSc Pre-sessional Courses

In order to complete an MSc in the Department of Economics you will benefit from having a working knowledge of microeconomic principles, mathematics and statistics. In order to help students who may have a shortfall in knowledge in these areas we are running three pre-sessional courses prior to the start of the academic year that will provide the necessary background.

In addition to being able to attend a series of lectures in each subject the attendees will also be provided with a substantial supplementary reading list which they may find useful to refer to throughout their course.

These pre-sessional courses are open to any student who has registered for an MSc in the Department.

We strongly recommend that those who have gaps in their existing knowledge of any or all of these areas take the courses.

Who should take these courses and why?

These courses are primarily aimed at those who do not have an Economics degree or those who have been away from studying economics for a few years and need some revision of maths, statistics and/or microeconomics.

The three courses are designed to ensure that there is a minimum level of knowledge in each area prior to commencing the course, so that once the full MSc course starts there is basic common core of knowledge across all students.

The material covered in each course is given below. If these topics are unfamiliar to you then you should seriously think about taking the relevant course.

Microeconomic principles

Resource allocations; supply and demand; market price determination; theory of the firm.

Mathematics

Maximisation of utility subject to the budget constraint; demand functions and their properties; elasticities; market demand functions. The theory of the producer; cost minimisation of the production for a given level of output; demand functions for inputs and supply function of output; cost functions. Profit maximisation and equilibrium. Graphical solutions to simple linear programming problems.

Statistics

Descriptive statistics, probability, sampling distributions, inferential statistics, hypothesis testing and computer lab session on Excel and EViews.
