Student Ambassador schemes

Develop your skills, make friends and earn some extra money by becoming a Student Ambassador at City!

One of the many ways you can get involved during your time at City is by becoming a Student Ambassador. Ambassadors work within many teams within the University to provide an authentic student approach helping a range of people, both internally and externally.

At City, there are four different schemes available to be a part of. While each of them might have some overlap with others for what you might do in the role, they all have their own individual aims and target audiences.

  • Social Media Content Creators
  • Widening Participation (WP) Ambassadors
  • Student Voice Ambassadors
  • Marketing and Events Student Ambassadors

Also, all Ambassador schemes at City are paid so provide a great way of earning some extra money around your studies.

You can apply to as many as you like – just remember to consider balancing your studies with work.

Social Media Content Creators

City's Social Media team are recruiting a group of students to create engaging content for the University’s social channels. They are looking for creative students who are passionate about social media and content creation. From ‘days in the life’ and advice videos, to jumping on TikTok trends, this role offers plenty of creative freedom - they want to hear your ideas about what they should be sharing on City’s channels!

This role offers a lot of flexibility. Content Creators are paid for each piece of content they create: £11.68 per hour inclusive of holiday pay (for short videos they are paid for one hour's work, two hour’s pay for longer videos).

How to apply

Include a short paragraph explaining why you are interested in this role and an example of a video you have made. This can be a link to an existing video or something you have created specifically.

Please also include your name, course and City email address.

Widening Participation (WP) Student Ambassadors

City’s Widening Particpation (WP) team works with schools and colleges in areas of deprivation or with low rates of progression into higher education and with young people who will be the first in their family to attend university, young carers and those who have refugee or asylum seeker status.

WP Ambassadors support the team, acting as role models to inspire young people in Year 5 through to Year 13 (9-18 years old), to think about university, share your experience and support them in making realistic choices about their future. Ambassadors work as mentors, presenters, group leaders, tour guides and facilitators, all with support and supervision from the WP team.

Students are paid £10.42 per hour (plus holiday pay). Plus you get to give back to young people, become part of the WP Ambassador community and join in socials, and have paid work experience!

How do I apply for the Widening Participation Student Ambassador role?

You should talk about any work/voluntary experience in supporting young people as well as answering some questions relating to young people and Higher Education. Applications will then be shortlisted and successful candidates will be invited to an assessment centre.

As this scheme involved working with young people, all successful applications will also need to complete a DBS check.

Widening Participation Tutoring

The WP team also run a Tutoring Scheme for primary and secondary school students, helping them raise them improve their attainment in Maths and English. Tutors get paid £11.88 an hour (plus holiday pay). Applications are currently closed.

Student Voice Ambassadors

Student Voice Ambassadors are all about providing student feedback and input into projects designed to support and enhance the student experience, so you can really make a difference to you and your peers time at City. In particular, the scheme is set up to enable student involvement in projects relating to the following strategies:

  • Education and Student Strategy (ESS)
  • Access and Participation Plan (APP)
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy (EDI Strategy)

There are two roles available within the scheme:

  1. Student Voice – providing feedback via surveys, focus groups and email (students are paid £11.68 inclusive of holiday pay)
  2. Student Project – writing content, creating videos, supporting with projects (students are paid £19.96 inclusive of holiday pay)

Marketing and Events Student Ambassadors

As a Marketing and Events Ambassador, you will play a pivotal role in the University's marketing and outreach activity and attract new students to City through various means. These include supporting events on- and off-campus, content creation, and online forums to name a few.

Marketing and Events Student Ambassador roles pay from £11.68 per hour (including holiday pay). The scheme is designed to fit around your studies, but please remember to consider how much you can balance alongside them before applying.

What do Marketing and Events Student Ambassadors get asked about?

Marketing Ambassadors are asked many questions about life as a student, from choosing universities to the UCAS process to student life. Some of the common topics you may be asked about are:

  • Final year at school - what subjects did you study, differences between school and university, how to research universities, what did you write in your personal statement?
  • Your course - what modules do you study, why did you choose this subject and whether or not you are enjoying it.
  • Why you chose City - was it for the strength of the course, did it feel 'right' to you and looking back would you choose it again
  • Accommodation - where did you stay in your first year, how are the halls of residence and what is it like living at home versus staying in halls
  • Student life - what the local area is like, recommendations for good places to eat etc. and what is the Students' Union like.
  • Clubs and societies - what clubs and societies does City have and have you been involved in anything (if so, what)
  • Sports - what sports clubs does City have and what are the sports facilities like.

What makes a good ambassador?

  • Current City undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Enthusiastic about City and the benefits of higher education
  • Have a good knowledge of City’s Schools, services and campuses, and a willingness to learn more about the campus and university structure
  • Friendly; able to speak to a diverse range of people who may be shy or unsure about university
  • Reliable, organised, good at timekeeping, able to show initiative and work with minimal supervision
  • Professional. Ambassadors represent City and should be naturally courteous and professional
