City's degree will provide you with the skills and knowledge to help diagnose illness by producing and interpreting images. You will study in a unique environment which will mirror the facilities you will encounter whilst in the clinical environment.

City's radiography team are experts in the field and offer a challenging yet supportive environment in which to study.

City's radiography department was founded following the merger of five of London's top radiography schools - making it the place to study radiography. We also have close links with radiography departments in hospitals, the radiography profession and industry.

Entry Requirements:

  • A-AS-level: 300 UCAS tariff points.
  • IB: 33 (must include Physics)
  • Access to HE Diploma in Radiography or Science: Full award (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at Level 3 including 24 credits at Distinction to include Physics; 15 credits at Level 2, must include Mathematics and English Language GCSE equivalent passed at first attempt, if not already achieved.
  • BTEC: Extended Diploma DDM (Applied Science or Medical Science only).
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: 320 UCAS points.
  • Scottish & Advanced Highers: 300 UCAS points
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: 32 (must include Physics)

Entry Requirements

Please note our entry qualifications have been updated with effect from 8th October 2012. We will ensure that applications received during the early part of the UCAS cycle are considered against our previous entry requirement so that you are not discriminated against.

Applications are considered from students from a wide range of backgrounds.

Typical offers require one of the following:

  • A-AS-level: 300 UCAS tariff points, typically BBB at A2. This must include a minimum of one Science A Level (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology). General Studies, Key Skills and Critical Thinking are not accepted at A2.
    Please note all applicants must have 5 GCSEs including Mathematics, English Language and Science (Physics preferred) at A*-C.
  • IB: 33 (must include Physics)
  • Access to HE Diploma in Radiography or Science: Full award (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at Level 3 including 24 credits at Distinction to include Physics; 15 credits at Level 2, must include Mathematics and English Language GCSE equivalent passed at first attempt, if not already achieved.
  • BTEC: Extended Diploma DDM (Applied Science or Medical Science only).
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: 320 UCAS points gained at Higher from 5 subjects including English Language, Maths, Chemistry and Physics grades A1-B3.
  • Scottish & Advanced Highers: 300 UCAS points gained at Advanced Highers Grade A-C (must include Science).  English Language and Maths from Highers grades A-C, if not already part of Advanced Highers
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma:  32 (must include Physics)

When you apply for the course there are two main pathways; standard and non-standard.

Standard is where you are leaving school after having studied "A" levels, Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish Advanced Highers, or International Baccalaureate Diploma. The selection procedure for this is:

We will consider your UCAS points (A levels; Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish Advanced Highers; or International Baccalaureate Diploma) along with;

  • Standard matriculation i.e. 5 GCSEs to include Maths, English and Science at grade "C" or above.
  • Your personal statement and reference. This needs to show evidence of your commitment to radiography as a career, the nature of the job and your ability to work in a caring environment.
  • Your clinical feedback form from the appropriate discipline along with your GCSE certificates.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. This should be evidenced by suitable completion of the UCAS form, personal statement and clinical feedback form.
  • Where you are offered a place on the programme you will be invited to attend an open day at City University London. This is intended to support you in your decision to choose this course in preparation for a career in radiography.

Non-Standard is where you are either not a school leaver or studying a suitable course not listed for standard entry e.g.

BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science or Medical Science related subject only: DDM                                    

Pass in a QAA recognised Access to Radiography or Science only: Full award (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at Level 3 including 24 credits at Distinction to include Physics, and 21 credits at Merit; 15 credits at Level 2, must include Mathematics and English Language GCSE equivalent passed at 1st attempt, if not already achieved.

Certificate of Higher Education in Life Sciences for Subjects Allied to Medicine:  Must complete 120 credits and receive 70% in all components, 6 of the modules to be Science based.  In addition, GCSE English Language and Maths @ Grade C or above.

Foundation Degrees: Reviewed on an individual basis.

Overseas Degrees: Equivalent to a British Bachelors Degree will be reviewed on an individual basis. 

The selection procedure for this is:

We will consider your UCAS points or other academic credits. You would normally have to show successful completion of a relevant academic course in the last five years (including the year of entry). Applicants who meet the tariff requirements but their most recent study is over 5 years ago including year of entry, will be considered on an individual basis. Along with;

  • Your personal statement and reference. This needs to show evidence of your commitment to radiography as a career, the nature of the job and your ability to work in a caring environment.
  • Your clinical feedback form from the appropriate discipline and your certificates for stated qualifications on your UCAS form.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. This should be evidenced by suitable completion of the UCAS form, personal statement and clinical feedback form.

You should be at least 18 years of age before commencing the clinical placement component of the programme and are required to pass Occupational Health clearance and a criminal record check by the Criminal Records Bureau. If you have not reached your 18th birthday before commencing the clinical placement the Radiation Protection Supervisor should be informed as you will require a risk assessment to comply with the relevant radiation protection regulations (Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999).

Applicants must also satisfy the University's standard entrance qualifications and comply with statutory requirements so that they are eligible to apply for registration as a radiographer upon qualification.

English Requirements

If your first language is not English, we will require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum requirements are:

  • IELTS: An overall band score of 7.5 with a minimum of 7 in each component
  • TOEFL: 110 internet-based total

Course Content

50 per cent of the course will be spent in the University and the other half on clinical placement.

As a diagnostic radiographer, you would use a range of imaging modalities such as:

  • Conventional/plain radiography
  • Fluoroscopy
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Ultrasound
  • Nuclear medicine (RNI)

Course Structure

Year one

The compulsory modules in the first year will introduce you to the principles and practice of diagnostic imaging. Year one will be spent primarily in the University.

  • Science for medical imaging 1
  • Principles of imaging in practice 1.

Year two

In your second year, you move on to more specialised subjects and begin to apply the knowledge and experience you gained in year one.

  • Radiography research methods and statistics
  • Science for medical imaging 2
  • Principles of imaging in practice 2
  • Professional practice in medical imaging

Year three

During your final year, the modules help you become more critical and evaluative in your work.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught in various ways - lectures, seminars, and practical training in the Saad Centre for Radiography Clinical Skills Education, which provides an unique environment which will mirror what you will encounter in the clinical environment. The University also reinforces the teaching through the use of online/e-learning that enables you to learn interactively using the internet, with self tests and film-viewing quizzes as well as online lecture notes being made available.

Your work will be assessed through course work, written examinations, class tests, multiple-choice tests, practical examinations and clinical assessments while you are on clinical placement.

  • The Whittington University Hospital.

Throughout your course, you will have one primary clinical placement as your main site, but you will also rotate through other hospitals to gain greater clinical experience.

Career Prospects

On graduation you will be professionally recognised by the College of Radiographers and be able to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council and practise in the UK.

City's course has excellent employability, nearly all our graduates find employment in the NHS or private hospitals. You may also be able to practise internationally.
