Professional Practice  BSc (Hons)

Overview

The Professional Practice course will enhance your knowledge and understanding of effective team and interprofessional working, encourage your own personal and professional development, and give you a critical insight into the evidence base surrounding your own area of professional practice.

The course has an interprofessional approach to teaching which means you learn with others from different professional groups and benefit from different perspectives on common issues, while learning how to approach these in your own work situation. Learning within a group and sharing information across professional roles and responsibilities really enhances the study experience.

Learning methods are dynamic and stimulating. The course is delivered by experts from across the School.

Who is the course for?

The programme is suitable for those working in healthcare, education, child care, emergency services, the police, social care or the voluntary sector. The Policing route is for serving police officers / staff who have completed a foundation degree or diploma in Policing studies.

Entry Requirements

Tariff Points

  • Foundation Degree or Diploma
  • We welcome applications from a wide range of backgrounds 
  • It is not necessary for applicants to be in full-time employment.

English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 6.0
  • TOEFL (internet-based): 213

Visa Requirements

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course at City, there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

When and Where

Start Date:
Each programme route commences in September, although you can also join the programme at the beginning of each academic period, January or May.
Duration:
Students on the full-time programme have up to two years to complete it; those on the part-time programme have up to three years.
Frequency:
Once a year (but with additional entry in January or May subject to approval)

Course Content

Alongside classroom-based education students undertake work-based projects, online learning and interdisciplinary participation to create a rich and dynamic experience.

The programme has been designed to allow practitioners who already have qualifications or experience equivalent to a Diploma in Higher Education to develop their learning and qualify for a BSc degree.

There are currently three study routes - each focusing on core professional development, but with tailored modules that give you a degree in your area of specialisation.

  • BSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Child and Youth Studies)
  • BSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Public Service Management)
  • BSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Policing)

Practitioners who wish to undertake the course but who do not have the relevant Foundation Degree or Diploma can undertake Professional Practice without a specialist route.

This course will enable you to develop in your current role, develop your career path and gain entry to MSc level. The course is flexible so you can plan your studies to fit in with your work and your life.

Child and Youth Studies route

This route gives professionals from a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to become competent practitioners and leaders in the field of child and youth work; to develop their professional skills, knowledge and understanding though work, and to demonstrate the acquisition of skills, knowledge and understanding required of a graduate.

Policing route

This route aims to develop your skills and knowledge to become competent practitioners in operational policing practice. You will explore the contemporary discourse surrounding the continual demands of operational policing in the context of ongoing transformation and public expectations and will develop the skills to become critical and reflective practitioners.

Public Service Management route

This route gives professionals from a wide range of backgrounds to develop the skills and knowledge required for success in administrative and management roles in the public and voluntary services sector.

The programme consists of six modules plus a dissertation module.

Teaching and Assessment

The course will be delivered through formal lectures followed by practice-orientated seminars; enquiry-based learning; student-led seminars around specific professional practice topics and disciplines; group projects; and project development. You will also benefit from personal tutorials to follow up the content of shared modules.

Assessment is through a combination of course work, projects and reflective practice.
