Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies course enables qualified nurses to top up their studies to degree level and further develop their knowledge and skills in their profession. The course enables general progression or the opportunity to specialize or diversify following specialist degree pathways. We offer a wide choice of areas in which to take your modules, including clinical assessment and specialised clinical knowledge.

Course Fees:

Full-time EU: £7,500 (2013/14). 2012 fees, all fees to be confirmed.
Part-time EU: £3,750 (2013/14). 2012 fees, all fees to be confirmed.
Full-time Non EU: £14,300 (2013/14). 2012 fees, all fees to be confirmed.
Part-time Non EU: £7,150 (2013/14). 2012 fees, all fees to be confirmed.

Start Date:

The programme can be started January or September of each academic year.

Entry Requirements

You must be a qualified nurse in the UK, although your qualification can be from overseas.

For specialist routes you must be working within an appropriate specialist healthcare setting
If you are a qualified nurse but do not already have the full 120 points of certified learning at Diploma level, you can show you have achieved the equivalent through your professional experience, by applying to take our Accreditation of Prior Experimental Learning (APEL) entry route.

English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

GCSE English Language at Grade C or above
IELTS: 7.0 or equivalent

Visa Requirements

City University London retains Highly Trusted Status from UKBA, enabling us to sponsor international students to study in the UK.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course at City, there are different rules for:

Students on courses of more than 6 months
Students on courses of less than 6 months
Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

When and Where

Start Date:: The programme can be started January or September of each academic year.
Duration:: Full time: Typically the programme takes one year to complete the modules and up to 18 months with the dissertation. Part time/distance learning: Typically the programme takes between two to three years to complete, but can take up to five years if required.

Course Content

The course is designed to give you a modular and flexible approach to study so you can tailor the course to your personal development and goals.

The top up degree can be taken on a part time or full time basis for up to five years to suit your own personal needs. All modules can be selected on a standalone individual basis as part of CPD to meet the needs of the NHS Knowledge Skills Framework.

The course will help you improve your confidence and practice, and develop your career to more senior roles. You can start the course in January or September.

Course Structure

Generic route

Students would need to take 120 HE6 level credits made up as follows:

2 programme core modules
1 route core module
3 optional modules
1 dissertation

Specialist route

Students would need to take 120 HE6 level credits made up as follows:

2 programme core modules
3 route core modules
1 optional module
1 dissertation

If you have up to 30 HE6 level credits from another institution or 60 HE6 level credits from City University London these may be recorded as prior learning (APL) to replace any of the optional modules above. City University London qualified diploma level nurses with 60 HE6 level credits will be exempt from the route core module NM3301 (Biological foundations in clinical practice and related pharmacology).

The routes below have two modules related to their specialist area:

Supporting Long Term Care route
Acute and Critical Care route
Intensive Care route
Cardiac Care route

The Supporting Long Term Care route offers the following modules, from which two can be selected

Diabetics care
Assessing the older adult
Asthma and COPD

If you have a specific area of interest, you may be able to select further modules from our portfolio.

When you have successfully completed the taught modules and the dissertation, you will qualify for a BSc (Hons) degree. Complete just the taught modules and you will achieve a BSc degree.

Teaching and Assessment

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including taught modules; e-learning and work-based learning.

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of the BSc degree level programme, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. Assessment includes essays; objective structured clinical examinations; practice-based assessments and seminar presentations with supporting papers. The dissertation can be either a literature review, portfolio review or a work-based project. Once you start to prepare for your research project you will also have a research supervisor, skilled in your particular discipline.

Placements

You do not need to have a work placement, but are expected to apply principles to practice in the assessments. If you chose clinical modules to study you need to be working within the clinical area or have access to patients with those conditions.

The course can enhance your current practice enabling you to gain a higher understanding or can prepare you for working as a nurse or midwife at a more advanced level, assisting with your overall career progression.
