Web Authoring Short Courses
This course teaches the fundamental concepts in web site design, management and implementation using HTML 4/XHTML. It also provides an important foundation for students who may be interested in industry certification programmes or other web-based technologies such as PHP, XML and JavaScript. Students will be expected to design and produce a working site.

Tutor Info
Faezeh Seyedarabi comes from a Computer Science background that includes software and website development. She has an MSc in Logic and Computation and has completed her PhD Programme. She has designed and developed a number of websites for personal and research use, arising from which she has published a number of national and international papers. Eligibility
Microsoft Windows and the use of a web browser.
What will I learn?
- Context: About the Internet and Web. W3C and web standards. Resources and tools e.g. code editors, HTML exports from productivity suites such as MS Office and WYSIWYG editors. The processes and skill sets involved in site planning, design and construction. Site management. Client-server solutions. Platform and browser compatibility. Prototyping.
- Coding: Fundamentals of HTML including doctypes, formatted text, links, images, image maps, tables, forms, and meta tags. Overview of XHTML, CSS (stylesheets) and other site content such as JavaScript and Flash.
- HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) including usability and accessibility.
- Graphics. Vectors and bitmaps. Web image types. Image optimisation. Example uses.
- Other issues: Fundamental security and good programming considerations. Testing and validation. Site publicity/marketing e.g. search engine submission.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Explain the fundamental characteristics of the Web, such as its development
- Design and create a web site including graphics content.
