Spanish Accelerated - Total Beginners  Short Courses

Taught mostly in Spanish, this is a course for total beginners. Spanish Course for Total Beginners is a two-evening-per-week introduction to the language and way of life for the purpose of practical communication. Whether you are studying for travelling, working abroad or with foreign companies, the Spanish course based in London will enable you to communicate confidently, socialise and not feel out of place in the country you are visiting.

This is a highly intensive Spanish course that requires commitment and dedication. By the end of the course students will have covered the syllabus normally covered in Modules 1 and 2 of the Spanish Beginners (Year 1) course. Students should expect to study between classes to be able to keep up with the course's pace.

Tutor Info

Ana Tella has a Law degree (Zaragoza University, Spain, 1992) and an International House Certificate in Language Teaching to adults (2005). She has been teaching Spanish in various institutions such as the University of the Arts London, International House and in various language schools.

What will I learn?

The course combines modules 1 and 2 of the Spanish Beginners (Year 1) course. Topics covered include: greetings; introducing yourself and others (job, age etc); countries and nationalities; the alphabet; formal v informal; numbers 0-100; talking about your family; describing yourself and others (colours, physical features, characters etc.); drinks and snacks; the date; articles; shopping; talking about places; where you live; the house and furniture; finding a property; booking into a hotel; places in a town and finding your way; transport; telling the time; asking for opening times; expressing likes and dislikes; expressing an opinion (agreeing and disagreeing); asking how much something is; daily routine and weekends; parts of the body and health; making suggestions; telephone conversations; entertainment and events; arranging appointments and making invitations; talking about the past; present tense: regular verbs in -ar, -ir and irregular verbs ; ser, estar and tener; interrogative pronouns; adjectives; number and gender; demonstratives (this, that one…); there is (hay…); prepositions of place; reflexive pronouns (me, te, se etc); expressions of frequency (a veces, una vez al  mes, a menudo etc); muy vs much; exclamative sentences; querer + infinitive; poder + infinitive; introducing the past tense (préterito indefinido); introducing the future tense.

Teaching and Assessment

Classroom activities will include: drilling, role-playing, listening comprehension, note-taking, gap-filling exercises, writing, reading comprehension, matching exercises, work on pronunciation and intonation and grammar taught in context.

Students who successfully complete the Spanish Accelerated course can progress to Module 3 of Spanish Beginners (Year 1) and complete the Beginners Level (Year 1) in Spanish by the end of June 2012.
