Val McMunn is a qualified nurse, midwife, teacher, Independent nurse prescriber and is employed as a lecturer at City, University of London in contraception, sexual health and cytology.
She holds an MSc in Public Health and a Post Graduate Certificate in Sexual Health as well as being an Associate of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and holds a letter of competence for intrauterine techniques and subdermal Implants.
She currently works clinically within contraception/sexual health services where she maintains her clinical skills and knowledge.
Her previous roles have been working ITU nurse, school nurse, midwife both in hospital and in the community, family planning nurse, community midwife manager, manager of family planning services, Assistant Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology and has been a lecturer for 13 years.
She has published work in regard to alcohol consumption related to sexual behaviour and Chlamydia infection in young women and oropharyngeal health in relation to sexually transmitted infections linked to oral sex. Last year she presented at the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Annual Conference in Birmingham.

What will I learn?
This study day will give delegates a comprehensive introduction to the various methods of contraception and a basic understanding of the signs, symptoms and treatment of the most common sexually transmitted infections. On the day the following will be presented in relation to risks, benefits and choice related to the UKMEC guidance:-
- Combined oral contraception
- Progesterone oral contraception
- Long acting contraception (implants, injectable and intra uterine methods)
- Emergency contraception
- Pregnancy testing
- The most common sexually transmitted infections i.e Chlamydia, Bacterial vaginitis, gonorrhoea.
Teaching and Assessment
There is no formal assessment for the delegates on this day. You will receive a certificate of attendance from the prestigious City, University of London. The day will be evaluated and your comments received with thanks.
