Intermediate Digital Imaging with Adobe Photoshop  Short Courses

Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard tool for working with digital imagery, and its creative potential is used by amateurs and professionals alike. This course has been designed for those familiar with Adobe Photoshop basics and explores in depth some of the more powerful design capabilities hidden beneath its complex interface. Throughout the  course, emphasis is placed on the applied aspects of Adobe Photoshop, providing solutions to those 'real world' scenarios that are faced in any design/production environment or photographer's studio. The course will cover digital illustration, graphic art and precision photo enhancement with a general introduction to understanding light, depth and perspective in images. Graphics tablets are recommended.

Tutor Info

Michael Kloihofer works as a freelance designer and digital artist in London creating visualisations and images for professional clients in architecture, product design, interior design and development. His background in architecture and design has allowed him to develop a specialisation for creating stunning imagery through photo montage, graphic design, digital illustration and image compositing with 3d modelling programs. Michael is also himself an amateur photographer and his creative work both in photography and design has been published internationally in the U.S., Canada, London, Sweden and Israel.

Eligibility

Successful completion of Digital Imaging with Adobe Photoshop or knowledge of subjects therein.

  • Main features of Photoshop: Selecting, Layers, Type, Layer effects, Filters, Painting, Retouching, Actions.

  • Selection techniques and resizing Images : Quick masks, Saving selections as a mask, Editing and loading Masks, Creating a gradient layer mask. Resampling up and sampling down. Extending a background. Dissolving edges.

  • Paths: Drawing paths with the pen tool, moving and adjusting paths, painting paths, stroking and filling paths. Changing paths into outlines and vice versa. Using the pen tool to extract an image from a complex background.

  • Advanced layer techniques: Compositing techniques, adjustment layers, combining layers in clipping groups. using clipping groups and layer effects with editable type.

  • Textures and lighting effects: Employing lighting effects to transform photographic images. Using bitmaps/texture channels to create complex 3d textures from scratch. Type effects: Editable text with textures, pictures and effects, type with imagery using clipping groups, Fading text. Using type as a layer mask. Employing lighting effects.

  • Special effects: Colourising black and white images, Effects with Filter combinations. Seamless patterns.

  • Exporting/importing images: Importing and placing vector graphics. Outputting finished images to screen and print. Saving and exporting clipping paths into other applications. Exporting images.

  • Automating tasks: Creating and recording actions, playing, editing and organising actions.

Teaching and Assessment

Students are given optional take home exercises, applying the lessons to their own artwork and having additional feedback from the tutor. A final assignment is given at mid-term and to be completed for end of term which will require a combination of the skills in the course and give the students an opportunity for creative expression.
