French Advanced - Year 4 Short Courses
Taught in French, this is a course for advanced students, running once a week in central London. It is a follow-up to the French Upper Intermediate (Year 3) course for those wishing to consolidate both active and passive language skills for the purpose of practical communication. Each term of this Advanced French Course consists of ten two-hour classes.
This is a three-term French course for advanced students, running once a week. If you miss an October enrolment and you already have some significant knowledge of French, you can join the Advanced French class in Term 2 or 3 but you will need to have your level assessed. Tutor Info
Bérengère Decroux has an MA in History (Panthéon-Sorbonne, 2002) and a Teaching Qualification in French as a Foreign Language (Alliance Française, 2006). She has been teaching in various institutions both in France and the UK, such as the Alliance Française de Paris, Accord, The City Lit and London Metropolitan.
Eligibility
You should have one of the following:
- approximately 150-180 hrs prior formal study
- successfully completed French Upper Intermediate - Year 3
- lived or worked in France or a French-speaking country. You should be able to handle complex tenses (such as pluperfect, past conditional or past historic, passive voice, subjunctives) and be able to contribute to a discussion on topical and cultural issues
- a recent and good French A-level/rusty degree.

What will I learn?
The following topics will be covered in class: news and medias, art and culture and French way of life.
The following grammar points will be revised: various past tenses, pronouns, reported speech, language registers, conditional present and past, subjunctive present and past, passive and active forms.
Teaching and Assessment
The course will include formative evaluation (to help you assess your strengths and weaknesses), an oral presentation and continuous support from your tutor. All evaluation will take place in a relaxed and informal setting.
Career Outcome
At the end of Year 4 (Advanced) students are expected to be able to understnd the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialisation. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaciton with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Students are able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topic issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
