French Accelerated - Total Beginners Short Courses
Taught mostly in French, this is a course for total beginners. It is a two-evening-per-week introduction to the language and way of life for the purpose of practical communication. By the end of the French Accelerated course students should have an understanding of the structure of the language, be able to carry a simple conversation and have an awareness of the French culture. Students will be able to understand simple spoken and written French.
This is a highly intensive course that requires commitment and dedication. By the end of the course students will have covered the syllabus normally covered in Modules 1 and 2 of the French Beginners (Year 1) course. Students should expect to study between classes to be able to keep up with the course's pace.

Tutor Info
Muriel Hirsch has a Certificate in Teaching French to Adults (IH, 2008) and a Master in Family Mediation (Nanterre, 2002). She has been teaching French at City since 2009 and has taught in several institutions in London, such as the UIC and International House.

What will I learn?
Class taught in Term 2 and combines Modules 1 and 2.
Topics covered include: greetings; introducing oneself; the alphabet; definite and indefinite articles; formal and informal tu v vous; countries; nationalities and jobs; gender and adjectives; plurals; present tense of regular verbs; irregular verbs être and avoir; negative sentences; numbers up to 1,000; your age; talking about your family; possessive adjectives; prepositions au, aux, en, du etc; days of the week; time; around the house (locating with sur, à côté de etc) ; day-to-day activities; understanding and giving directions; booking a hotel room; reflexive verbs; irregular verbs faire, aller, venir, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, savoir; the imperative; foods and drinks; shops; some adverbs (often, never, always); likes and dislikes; interrogative pronouns (how, when, how much, where etc); hobbies; clothes; inviting someone and fixing an appointment; at the doctor's; introduction of the future and past (passé composé) tenses.
Teaching and Assessment
Classroom activities will include: drilling, role-playing, listening comprehension, note-taking, gap-filling exercises, writing, reading comprehension, matching exercises, work on pronunciation and intonation and grammar taught in context.

Students who successfully complete the French Accelerated course can progress to Module 3 of French Beginners (Year 1) course and complete the Beginners Level in French by the end of June 2012.
