This Digital Imaging with Adobe Photoshop short course provides hands-on training in the basics of Adobe Photoshop. Using Photoshop CS5.1 in practical teaching sessions, you will develop skills for creating, manipulating and mixing images for such purposes as web pages, desktop publishing or digital art works. Realistic examples are used throughout.

Tutor Info
Pete Polanyk is a graphic designer of 12 years' standing. He has created artwork for national newspapers, The Guardian and Independent among them, as well as for publishing houses and advertising agencies in London. Having recieved his OND at The London College of Printing (now the LCC), Pete studied at Camberwell College of Arts, gaining a degree in Graphic Design & Illustration. He has been teaching for over 10 years at City University but has found the time to also grace Greenwich University and University of the Arts London. He produces music and design for his own record label, Blossoms Kitchen, which has also featured in various books and trade magazines.
Eligibility
Working knowledge of the Windows or Macintosh interface.
English Requirements
Applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.
What will I learn?
- Basic concepts, Vector graphics, bitmap images, pixels, image size and resolution. Color modes RGB, Greyscale, Selecting with lasso Using the tool box, using the painting tool, selecting a blending mode
- Selecting with magic wand, feather, anti-aliasing more on color modes, CYMCK, LAB, and converting modes, Using palettes, saving, Changing image size and resizing a selection viewing images, magnifier, using history palette
- Cropping an image. Using filters, color adjustments, reading histogram level, highlight and shadow, color balance, the first project given
- Cloning using rubber stamp. More on selecting, magnetic lasso, polygon lasso, color range command, layers, transforming an image, rotating flip., using type
- Quick mask mode, all about layers, adjustment layers, layer mask, creating snapshot, second project given
- Creating a new background, gradient tool. Working on the second project, using the channel palette
- Duplicating channels, mixing, merging, and deleting channels, layer effect pattern stamp, Third project given
- Using spot channel, working on the third project
- Creating embossed text with shadow effect using channel. Creating fire, and different effects for text
- Assessment and criteria of the last project, tricks and more on special effects
By the end of the course, you will know:
- the terminologies used in PhotoShop
- different image types and size and the unique properties of each type
- using PhotoShop tools and filters
- be able to learn and use various techniques for ; image correction and enhancement
- manipulating and combining images, montage and collage, in order to create new images or create images from scratch
- how to save, import and export different types of images.
Teaching and Assessment
Informal assessment will take place through group discussion, class room activities, and questions and answers sessions as guided by your tutor.
