Digital Filmmaking: Advanced  Short Courses

This course provides an opportunity to make a short film under the supervision of industry professionals, with an emphasis on pre-production, lighting for digital film, camera work and editing with Final Cut Pro film editing software. This course is ideal for students looking for more production experience.

Tutor Info

David Pope is a director, producer and screenwriter. He also works as a consultant on projects, company strategy and in developing and delivering training and development programmes for the international film industry and to the wider creative and cultural industries.

Directing credits include the award winning feature film MILES FROM NOWHERE.

Training and support work has included previously holding the position of CEO of the NPA  (a national membership organisation for producers, directors and screenwriters) and Director of Education for New York Film Academy in London. David has also worked as a training consultant on curriculum and faculty development for The Irish Film Academy, The Metropolitan Film School, London Film Academy and City University London. He is also the consultant / moderator for The Rotterdam Lab for emerging producers at CineMart.

Other clients, partners and collaborators have included the BFI, UK Film Council, BBC, Cannes Cinefondation, Xingu Films, The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Edinburgh International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Lionhead Studios, Power to the Pixel, Xingu Films, UK Film Centre at Cannes Film Festival, Short Film Corner Cannes Film Festival, Film London and FIKE (Portugal), IPIFF (Romania) and Expresion en Corto (Mexico) film festivals.

In 2009 David was selected as a participant on the British Council Cultural Leadership International programme. Following cultural leadership conferences in Jordan and the UK his personally devised programme included meetings at Futures of Entertainment at MIT, The Sundance Institute, Film Independent and the Berlinale Co-Production Market

David is a British Film Institute associate tutor and has industry mentored for First Light the UK Film Council backed initiative to support filmmaking by young people.

Eligibility

Completion of Digital Filmmaking: a practical introduction or equivalent, or some filmmaking experience. This experience should include basic digital camera operating and digital editing. It should also include a basic knowledge of filmmaking grammar including different types of shots and their use within a visual narrative and types of continuity.

English Requirements

Digital Filmmaking applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.

What will I learn?

In pre-production you will be able to prepare directors' notes and storyboards, in production you will expand your understanding of lighting for camera and in post-production there will be an opportunity to learn about sound design.

Teaching and Assessment

Informal assessment will take place through group discussion, class room activities, and questions and answers sessions as guided by your tutor.
