Nursing with Nursing (Adavanced Practice) route MSc / Postgrad Diploma
Overview
This course allows you to develop your specialist skills and knowledge in adult or children's nursing. The MSc Nursing is mainly non-clinical for those wanting to develop their overall nursing practice and theory with a view to growing into leadership and management roles. The Nursing (Advanced Practice) route provides advanced clinical skills, enabling nurses to work as specialists.
As nursing shifts to being an all degree profession in the UK, the importance of consolidating and developing your skills base is more important than ever. This course will help you develop your practice at an advanced level, and develop your leadership, management and high level research skills to improve health care provision.
Who is the course for?
The course is for experienced nurses working in senior position or those who are preparing for nurse practitioner, care manager, nurse consultant or clinical leadership roles.
For the Nursing (Advanced Practice) route nurses must be working in senior clinical positions. A clinical work placement with appropriate supervision for physical assessment is required.

Entry Requirements
- Registration as a nurse. For the Nursing route, normally with two years' experience. For the Nursing (Advanced Practice) route at least five years' experience
- You must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and working in a healthcare setting
- A second class honours degree
- If you do not have a degree you will be considered, but may have to demonstrate an ability to study at degree level.
English Requirements
- IELTS: 7.0
- TOEFL (internet-based): 107
- Pearson's academic score: 72.
- A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency of the English language e.g. Australia, Canada or the USA.
Visa Requirements
The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course at City, there are different rules for:

When and Where

- Duration:
- Duration: Full time: a minimum of two days a week university-based study, up to five years. For Nursing (Advanced Practice), At least one day a week clinical practice, up to five years. Part time: one day a week university-based study, up to five years. For Nursing (Advanced Practice), at least one day a week clinical practice, up to five years. The Postgraduate Diploma modules can be completed within one year. The dissertation can take up to one further year to complete.
Course Content
You will be taught by internationally recognised academic staff. Our highly-regarded research activity also feeds directly into our teaching programmes. We work with health partners across London to ensure our education delivery is relevant and cutting edge.
The course is designed to provide you with flexible study options. There are two intakes each academic year in January and September. Students can study on a part-time or full-time basis.
You are able to adapt your MSc as your studies progress, so your studies are relevant to your career needs and personal interests. Compulsory modules are kept to a minimum, so you can choose from a wide range depending on your personal goals. Students are also able to study individual course modules on a stand-alone basis for continuing professional development. On completion of the taught modules students will qualify for a Postgraduate Diploma, completion of a dissertation leads to the full Masters degree.
Nursing (Advanced Practice) route
If you want to prepare for an advanced practice role in adult or children's nursing you can choose to study the Nursing (Advanced Practice) route.
You will follow a more prescribed route to ensure you meet the competencies for advanced practice but will still be able to choose some optional modules. We also offer specific modules for ophthalmic nurses.

- Medicines management, or
- Independent and supplementary non medical prescribing

If you have a specific related area of interest, you may be able to select additional modules from our portfolio.
When you have successfully completed the taught modules plus your dissertation, you will qualify for a full Masters degree or complete the taught modules and qualify for a Postgraduate Diploma.
Teaching and Assessment
A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including university-based taught modules; e-learning and work-based learning.
Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of a Masters level programme, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. Assessment includes essays; objective structured clinical examinations; practicebased assessments and seminar presentations with supporting papers.

Placements
Nursing route
You do not need to have a work placement, but are expected to apply principles to practice in the assessments.
Nursing (Adavanced Practice) route
