Overview

As a result of the NHS change agenda, Allied Health Professionals (AHP) are increasingly required to adopt new roles and responsibilities, and to practise in new ways that cross professional and organisational boundaries.

This is the first course in the UK designed to enable you to undertake leadership roles beyond your immediate services.                          

Who Should Apply?

Students are typically established AHPs looking to develop their management, service development and leadership skills.

How to Apply

Entry Requirements

  • Good honours degree or equivalent. This requirement may be waived if you can demonstrate relevant continuing professional development
  • You will be expected to be qualified as an AHP and to have considerable experience of working in this capacity
  • Experience of managing a service, or as an advanced or consultant practitioner will also normally be expected

English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English, one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 6.5
  • TOEFL (internetbased): 100.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course at City, there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Duration:
Part time: MSc and PG Diploma – two years Part time: PG Certifi cate – one year Teaching is normally in short blocks (usually two days) between September and May. The Management Project is undertaken between June and September in the second year.

Course Content

In addition to understanding the concepts and acquiring the analytical tools required to reflect critically on your current practice and the organisation in which you work, you will gain access to a network of senior professionals through associate membership of City's Centre for AHP Research. You will also benefit from continuing mentorship, advice and consultancy beyond the duration of the course.      

Course Structure

Core modules:

Year 1

  • Organisational development and change
  • Strategy-making for real
  • Change-management and leadership
  • Contemporary developments in AHP policy and service delivery 1

Year 2

  • Contemporary developments in AHP policy and service delivery 2
  •  Building the evidence base for eff ective AHP policy and practice (double module).

Optional modules currently include:

  • Managed healthcare
  • Quality management
  • Decision-making
  • Priority-setting in healthcare
  • Economic evaluation
  • Economics of healthcare

When you have successfully completed the seven taught modules plus your Management Project, you will be awarded the MSc. Complete the seven taught modules and qualify for a postgraduate diploma, or four taught modules to qualify for a postgraduate certificate.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching
Teaching and learning involve small groups, and a mix of lecturer-led presentations, participant-led exercises, and sessions led by expert visiting staff drawn from a wide range of professional and service backgrounds. There will also be guided reading and individual study.

Assessment
Modules are assessed mainly by individual written assignments that test your understanding of theories and concepts drawn from a range of relevant disciplines, and the ability to apply them creatively and constructively to the analysis of 'real life' organisational or managerial problems.

The Management Project (dissertation) off ers you the opportunity to tackle a significant issue of practical relevance to your own practice, organisation or profession.
