XML in Healthcare  Short Courses

The Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) is the open standard that underpins many of the open formats used to represent clinical data, information and knowledge. This course provides a practical introduction to XML and its use in healthcare applications.

This two day course provides an essential background to XML for anyone working in health informatics who wants to understand the key requirements, benefits and technology applications.

What will I learn?

Course materials include working sample applications and open source software tools for handling XML data, including editors, parsers, transformation and integration engines. There is scope for students to extend the practical exercises and assessments to suit their onward learning requirements.

Specific learning objectives are to:

  • Understand the basics of XML technology
  • See how XML is applied in healthcare applications
  • Gain hands-on experience of tools and techniques
  • Learn how to extend the knowledge gained. 

The course is presented in ten modules, with lecture-style presentations, hands-on learning exercises and self assessment questions. There are opportunities to interact and discuss issues with the instructors and fellow students and to extend the learning experience beyond the classroom using the learning materials and open source tools provided.

  1. Clinical Information Systems and the use of XML.
  2. Representing Structured Data with XML .
  3. Validation, Transformation and Processing of XML.
  4. Storing and Querying Structured XML data.
  5. HL7 and XML.
  6. The XML Continuity of Care Record and Continuity of Care Document.
  7. Integration with existing clinical data sources.
  8. Access control, Authentication and Single Sign On.
  9. From Logical to Physical Models with XML.
  10. Clinical knowledge and Decision Support in XML.
