Speech and Acoustics and Speech Perception  CPD

The module provides groundwork in the acoustics of speech and hearing and its application to clinical work with deaf people, the physiological and psychological bases of speech perception, methods of measuring and training speech perception and current research in the field.

Eligibility

  • First or second-class honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject
  • The Licentiate Diploma of the Royal college of Speech and Language Therapists is also accepted.

English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 6.5
  • TOEFL (internet-based): 100

What will I learn?

The module will enable you to:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of speech acoustics and the normal and pathological processes of speech perception in children and adults
  • Evaluate measures of speech perception
  • Rationalise and deliver improved speech perception training with deaf children and adults. 

Teaching and Assessment

Mode of delivery
Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, and laboratory workshops.

Assessment
Assessment for the module consists of a written examination designed to assess students' understanding of speech acoustics and the normal process of speech perception, your ability to evaluate measures of speech perception and your ability to rationalise speech perception training.
