Principles and practice of translation theory  CPD

In this distance-learning course, you will learn the theoretical frameworks relevant for professional translation. The course will introduce you to:

  • the translation process and its stages
  • source text analysis
  • translation method and procedures
  • fundamental notions in translation such as equivalence and translatability.
We aim to give you the relevant analytical tools to identify translation problems, as well as the theoretical tools, strategies and procedures required to make translation decisions in a systematic way.

Eligibility

The course is suitable for:

  • practising translators who wish to gain a more systematic understanding of the factors influencing decision making in translation
  • people who wish to embark on a career in translation
  • practising or future translators who wish to familiarise themselves with principles of translation theory.

What will I learn?

  • To critically assess translations and make reasoned judgements in respect of the application of individual translation strategies
  • To engage with and critically evaluate the major translation theories
  • To critically reflect on, find and apply appropriate strategies and procedures to solve genuine translation problems
  • To analyse the issues involved in the translation process and how they affect choice of method and procedures
  • To analyse a range of translation problems, provide a reasoned account for them, and evaluate contextually appropriate strategies
  • To demonstrate a critical understanding of the nature of source texts and the decision-making process in translation
  • To analyse the linguistic and extra-linguistic information in a range of source texts
  • To analyse a source text in terms of its origins and typical linguistic features, including text type
  • To distinguish between the different translation methods and evaluate their appropriate context of use
  • To work to deadlines
  • To work in a professional, independent way, demonstrating self-discipline, self-direction and reflectivity
  • To critically evaluate and apply strategies for continuing professional development.


You will be able to share ideas and discuss exercises and translation issues with other course participants as well as with students on the PG Principles and Practice in Translation course.

You will be encouraged to complete four written assignments and will receive feedback on these from your course tutor.
