Perineal suturing is an integral part of the midwives role and midwives are increasingly required to exercise more confidence in their role as members of the multidisciplinary team contributing to continuity of care to the women.

Eligibility
- You must be a qualified nurse or midwife either in the UK or overseas.

The module requires you to be:
- Working in a suitable practice area.
What will I learn?
The short course will enable you to:- Define perineal tear and identify ways of preventing them during the ante and intrapartum period
- Recognise when and how to suture a perineal tear and episiotomy after delivery
- Consider the morbidity women undergo following perineal tear
- Understand the relevant anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor
- Manage labour with skills appropriate to the minimisation of perineal tears
- Assess the degree of perineal tear and distinguish between 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th degree tears
- Consider appropriate analgesia
- Select appropriate suture material
- Conduct various suturing techniques of the perineum.
Teaching and Assessment
Mode of deliveryTeaching methods include both taught and practical sessions.
Assessment
Assessment for the short course consists of an observed proficiency.
