Eligibility

  • You must be a qualified nurse, midwife or practitioner either in the UK or overseas.
Work/Clinical Placement Requirements

The module requires you to be:

  • Working in a suitable practice area
  • Have a clinical mentor.

English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English one of the
following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 7
  • TOEFL (internet-based): 107

What will I learn?

The module will enable you to:

  • Review the epidemiology of HIV and STIs, their transmission and the social, cultural and economic impact
  • Understand the professional, legal and ethical considerations of STIs and HIV
  • Explore the spiritual, sociological and political impact of sex, stigma and infection
  • Develop knowledge that underpins HIV and sexual health competencies including sexual history taking, risk assessment and asymptomatic STI screening and HIV testing
  • Examine the transformation of patient prognosis after the advent of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (ARTs)
  • Consider the role of PEP, PrEP and PEPSE in relation to HIV prevention
  • Develop your understanding of the changing social, political and legislative contexts of HIV and sexual health service provision.

Teaching methods include lectures, presentations and specialist tutorial support.

Assessment
Assessment for the module consists of a 3,000 word essay.
