Health Informatics  CPD

The module provides an introduction to the field of health informatics.

Undertaking this module you will have the opportunity to explore the ways in which information and communication technologies may be used to support patient care and service delivery, healthcare management and research. The module does not focus on technical issues per se, but rather on the ways in which patients, clinicians and managers can benefit from these systems.

Eligibility

Entry requirements for BSc Health Sciences (online) programme:
  • 120 Level 1 credit points and 120 Level 2 credit points in healthcare-related subjects
Entry requirements for study as a stand-alone module:

  • Current registration with a professional and regulatory body (healthcare)

English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • GCSE English Language at Grade C or above
  • IELTS: 6.0

What will I learn?

The module will enable you to:

  • Explain the principles and concepts which underpin health informatics
  • Critically discuss the different uses of patient information and methods of collecting, recording and presenting patient information with reference to the resource implications
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the extant legal requirements and professional frameworks relating to the security and confidentiality of patient information
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness of national and international agencies for promotion of excellence in healthcare provision
  • Explain the key principles and the related vocabulary which underpin the purpose, use and storage of healthcare data and information.

Teaching and Assessment

Mode of delivery
Teaching methods include online seminars which include interactive applications, online discussions and other opportunities for reflection on how theories are linked to practice.

Assessment  
Assessment for the module consists of a single 3000 word essay which should be the students' own individual work.

Funding

The module is available through local trusts' contract with City University London.
