Department of Applied Biological Sciences

The Department is responsible for the teaching, research and academic development of those areas of the biological sciences that inform and underpin professional health care practices. These areas include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, genetics, nutrition, biochemistry, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.
 
The Department aims to inform and improve the quality of patient care by facilitating the development, application and utilisation of knowledge from these subject areas to health care practice.
 
The Departments academic staff are all qualified health professionals who have a first and/or higher degree in an area of the biological sciences i.e. human biology, pharmacology, medical genetics with immunology, applied human physiology, life sciences, microbiology, comparative physiology. An academic administrator, secretary, and biological sciences learning facilitator/resources co-ordinator support the academic activity in the Department.
 
The Department has a wide range of professional expertise, in Adult Nursing, Children’s Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, and Midwifery. All academic staff have practice links with health care provider services.
