I have been involved in the ongoing development of NRIC (The National Resource for Infection Control) project since 2005, content managing the project and helping to promote the site to infection prevention specialists and healthcare workers in community, independent and hospital settings, providing them with timely access to the latest evidence base on infection prevention and control. The project is based at City eHealth Research Centre (CeRC) and I am presently contracted to the Department of Health (DH) as a Nurse Consultant, Infection Prevention and Control.

Background

I previously held the post of Health Protection/Infection Control Adviser for the Professional Nursing Department (PND) at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) part time and was also Lead Nurse for Infection Prevention and Control employed by the PHLS and contracted to West Dorset General Hospital Trust and North and South West Dorset Primary Care Trust. During my time at Dorchester I undertook an MSc in Public Health at Birmingham University. Previous to that I have had experience in the management and delivery of nursing care in a variety of settings in hospitals and community and in light and heavy industry (in the specialties of Occupational Health and Infection Prevention and Control). I have participated in work nationally on a variety of DH working groups and was lead author on the document "Infection Control in the Built Environment" for NHS Estates. I have also carried out research on the importance of the environment in cross infection. I served on the ICNA National Executive Committee and was National Honorary Secretary for 3 years also representing the ICNA/RCN on the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP). In 2006 I was interim lead on project work for the DH on a Uniform and Laundry Review Project. More recently along with my work on NRIC I have undertaken the role of Director of Infection Prevention and Control (DIPC) for North and South West Dorset PCT during its merger with South East Dorset PCT to become Dorset Primary Care Trust. I have also carried out a project on environmental cleanliness for Dorset County Hospital Foundation Trust.

I have been a registered nurse for more than 40 years and amongst a lifetime of continuing learning achieved an MSc in Public Health from Birmingham University in 2000. During my career in infection control I have undertaken research and presented outcomes of this research on the subject of infection control in the built environment as well as infection prevention generally. More recently I have attended conferences both nationally and internationally, to promote the work and development of NRIC. My real ‘five minutes of fame’ was during my work at the RCN when I was invited to sit on the red sofa at BBC Breakfast and attempt to answer questions on infection prevention and control!
