Summary:

At present the only centre in the UK performing the osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis procedure is the Sussex Eye Hospital. The Brighton OOKP team is led by Mr Christopher Liu and includes clinicians and basic scientists.

Our contribution has centred on improving the visual rehabilitation of OOKP patients. This is particularly imnportant if patients develop atrophic macular degeneration and need to use their peripheral visual field more. Specifically we have looked at improving the visual field, typically of the order of 40-50 degrees. This has been achieved by relaxing some of the size constraints on the cylinder and improving the off-axis image quality to increase the retinal illuminance in the periphery while still permitting (theoretically) 6/5 vision. Initial results are encouraging and we are currently collecting clinical data on these patients.

Current work includes:

• making practical the use of two lens designs theoretical visual fields of 120 degrees can be obtained
• developing the optics for use with an artificial lamina (support). This allows much wider diameter lenses than possible with a tooth root.
