You pay the above fees (which usually increase each year in line with inflation) annually until you are ready to go into ‘Writing Up’ status, whereby you are no longer researching your research topic and are solely writing up your thesis for examination. You will not be required to pay further tuition fees but must continue to pay the annual Writing-Up fee.

The annual writing-up fee is £300. The fee for students who continue writing up for more than 12 months (if full-time) or 18 months (part-time) is raised to £500 per annum.

For more information about how you can pay your fees, please see: http://www.city.ac.uk/finance/student_info/payingfees.html

Maintenance and living expenses

As well as paying for tuition fees, it is important for prospective students to budget for living expenses. These vary according to individual needs and tastes; however, accommodation is a significant factor, as costs in London are usually higher than in many other British cities.

Students will need to take account of the cost of food, clothing, books & stationery, travel and entertainment. Research students also need to budget for thesis preparation and, where necessary, fieldwork or travel (possibly outside the United Kingdom).

It must also be borne in mind that these costs are liable to rise in line with inflation. Students from other countries should also allow, as regards their whole budget, for the possibility of fluctuations in exchange rates.

Sources of Funding

There are no mandatory awards for research study, and funding sources, some of which are listed below, are limited. Students should consider carefully the cost of fees and maintenance at an early stage in the application process.

City University Research Studentships

University Research Studentships are available for conducting a doctoral research degree in any School of the University. Each Studentship provides:

  • An annual bursary of £14,500 (which will rise in line with inflation in subsequent years)
  • A full tuition fee waiver
  • A one-off allowance of £1,000. This may be used across the three-year period to cover the cost of attending conferences, purchasing equipment or some other activity in support of the research.
The studentships are available to both UK/EU and overseas fee-paying students. They are only open to new applicants (not those already studying at City) who will be studying full-time. Please note that while applications for research degrees at City can usually be made at any time of year, University Research Studentships are awarded only once a year. The next closing date is Monday 25 January 2010 (for studentships available from 1 October 2010).

City University Overseas Student Awards

The scheme replaces the Overseas Research Students (ORS) Awards, a UK Government scheme which ran between 1979 and 2009. With the announcement that the Higher Education Funding Council for England would no longer fund ORS Awards after 2009, City decided to institute its own scheme in order to continue support for outstanding international research students. City Overseas Student Awards cover the doctoral tuition fees of outstanding international students who meet the scheme's eligibility criteria. The closing date is Monday 25 January 2010 (for studentships available from 1 October 2010).

Centre for Law, Justice & Journalism Research Studentships

The Centre brings together expertise in the disciplines of Law, Criminology, and Journalism, at City University London. The Centre is offering 5 three-year, full-time doctoral Research Studentships, available to both home and overseas fee-paying students. For entry in October 2010 or earlier if possible, the studentships will attract a bursary of £12,000 per annum in addition to payment of the tuition fees. The closing date is Monday 25 January 2010 (for studentships available from 1 October 2010).

Postgraduate Cultural Policy & Management Bursaries

The Department of Cultural Policy & Management is offering bursaries of up to £5,000 to students applying to its MA programme and its PhD Research programme for the academic year 2010-11. The bursaries will be awarded to those who show excellent writing skills, flair and critical judgement. The closing date is Monday 1 March 2010, following the receipt of a completed programme application form and a confirmed acceptance.

The Overseas Scholarships in Music

These scholarships are open to full-time overseas research students (UK/EU students are ineligible) who begin an MPhil-PhD in Music in 2010/11. The award comprises a £4,000 contribution to overseas tuition fees, renewable for a further 2 years dependent on progress. The closing date is Monday 25 January 2010 (for studentships available from 1 October 2010).

Career Development Loans

Under a scheme operated by the Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays, the Co-operative and Clydesdale banks, students wishing to undertake certain courses, lasting no longer than two years, may borrow a maximum of £8,000. Repayments are delayed and the government pays the interest during the course and for one month afterwards, or six months if unemployed when repayments are due. Contact the Career Development Loans enquiries number on 0800 585505 for further information.

Charities & Trusts

Students requiring information about charities and trusts are advised to consult the following publications: The Grants Register (Palgrave Macmillan) and the Directory of Grant Making Trusts (Charities Aid Foundation). The Charity Commission has a database containing information about all UK charities, grant-making trusts and foundations. Students may access the information free of charge, although there is a charge for printing the material.

International Students

A number of British Council scholarships are awarded via the British Council’s representative in the applicant’s country of origin. The scheme operates in approximately 70 countries. The British Council publicises the awards and is responsible for selection of candidates. For the addresses of Council representatives, contact The British Council, 10 Spring Gardens, London SW1A 2BN, tel: 020 7930 8466.

Research Council studentships

Research Council studentships provide funding for UK and EU students. They are normally available for research degrees and some master’s courses. The Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is the usual source of possible funding for research students in the arts and humanities. City University has been awarded a block grant of studentships by the AHRC.  Unfortunately though, there are no doctoral studentships from the AHRC available at City University in 2010.
