This module investigates the often neglected interaction between the so-called fringe and the mainstream in 20th century performing arts. It explores the concepts that prompted some writers, composers and directors to employ satire or irony when addressing their commonly held view of the tragedy of human existence; central to the discussion is the ubiquitous figure of the clown.
