Wagner, Mahler & Schoenberg

During this module we will trace the ways in which these three composers successively grappled with the late Romantic idea that music gave its listeners access to spiritual realities.

We will begin with the writings and operas of Wagner, continue with the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, and conclude with vocal works on Jewish religious themes by Schoenberg.
