Music traditions of the Far East

Music traditions of the Far East

In this module you will explore the musical repertoire of the principal instruments and ensembles of Japan and the influences drawn from China and Korea.

Each lecture will investigate concepts of form and structure, melody and ornamentation, rhythm and metre, whilst placing the music in its broader social, religious and cultural context.

You will be expected to pursue complementary reading in other oriental performing and creative arts, such as theatre, dance and poetry, in order to develop a deeper understanding of the aesthetic principles underlying the music.
