This module allows you to explore how ideas of the past held by those inside and outside Greece shape understandings of Greek musics, both modern and ancient.

In repertories ranging from the music of Ancient Greece to the ‘popular art song’ of the 1960s you will explore such problems of Greek musical identity as ‘Eastern or Western?’ and ‘What do our present traditions owe to non-Greeks: Jews, Romans, Turks, Italians, etc.?’
