Graduate Prospects
96.6 per cent of our BMus students were in employment and/or further study within six months of completing the course (compared to the national average of 87.7 per cent for Music graduates).
This figure comprises 41.4 per cent of students in employment, 20.7 per cent in further study and 34.5 per cent who are combining work and study.
This excellent result from the most recent (2010) Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey reflects the continuing aspirations of the Centre for Music Studies to nurture highly employable students as a top-rated subject area of the 'University for business and the professions'.
Our Music graduates careers include performers, composers, secondary-school music teachers, peripatetic instrumental/vocal teachers, music examiners, orchestral conductors, administrators, royalty-tracking consultants, music therapists, sound recording engineers and music technicians.
Companies for which they work include the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the Barbican Centre, the University of Cambridge, Edexcel, Milton Keynes City Orchestra, Musical Sleuth and the National Health Service.
Those who enter postgraduate study typically pursue MA, MMus or PGCE courses, some progressing ultimately to a PhD degree.
Previous recognition for City's excellent employability record for Music students came in 2008 when it was named second in the UK for music graduate employment prospects (behind only Cambridge) in The Times Good University Guide.
City ranked 10th in UK for employability
City University London is ranked 10th in the UK for graduate employability (Times Good University Guide 2011) and graduate starting salaries (Sunday Times University Guide 2011)
