Overview
Barbara Norden started out as a theatre reviewer, editor and journalist writing on arts and social issues. Her plays include Souvenirs on Radio 4 in 2011 with Katherine Parkinson and Ivan Marevich. A short stage version of Souvenirs was performed by The Factory theatre company at Hampstead Theatre in 2009 and published in Brand literary magazine. She was awarded an Arts Council grant to develop Babylon, or Confusion.She has worked as a playwright with leading theatre companies including Birmingham Rep, Hampstead Theatre and Pentabus and has been involved in cabaret, storytelling and performance projects as a writer and/or co-producer. She has also published poetry, critical articles and translation and was shortlisted for the International Arvon Poetry Competition.
She has been awarded a Hawthornden Fellowship to support her writing. She is currently developing plays for theatre and radio and working with The Factory theatre company.
Barbara lectures and mentors part-time at City University London on the MA in Creative Writing (Playwriting and Screenwriting), which she set up in 2004. She has taught play analysis for the University of London and the Workers' Educational Association and writing classes for City, the Open University, the British Council and Russian Vogue. Her PhD research into dramatic form took her to New York where she spent time at NYU. She is a member of the AHRC's peer review college.
