The department's research is rated as internationally excellent or world leading (3* or 4*), placing it well within the top third of UK institutions (RAE 2008). A continuing and consistent investment in attracting researchers with established, recognised expertise has allowed the department to grow to approximately 26 full-time members of staff.

Our recent submission to the Research Excellence Framework saw more than double the number of staff being submitted compared to the previous assessment six years ago, and our reputation as an internationally recognised research-intensive department is growing rapidly.

The department is led by Professor Martin Conway, one of the foremost world experts in the field of autobiographical memory.
