Overview

Richard Balkwill's editorial career as an educational publisher included spells at Ginn, Nelson and, from 1977, at Macmillan, where he was publishing director of their education division. He was also later managing director of the Reed Elsevier division now known as Heinemann Library, part of Harcourt Education.

In 1992 he set up Copytrain, an independent consultancy offering training and copyright advice to companies and individuals. Richard has also worked as a Visiting Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University since 1994, and is currently an associate consultant in the Centre for International Publishing Studies there.

Until 2005, Richard was the external examiner for the City MA in Publishing Studies. He joined the teaching team in 2006-7. In the Publishing law module, he draws on his experience as consultant to the Publishers Licensing Society since 1993. As an associate of Rightscom, he also presents in-house seminars and workshops for publishing companies looking to understand better how copyright and intellectual property matters affect their business.
