Overview

Dr Nooshin gained her BA in Music from the University of Leeds in 1984 and her MMus in Ethnomusicology from Goldsmiths' College (University of London) in 1986, where she also taught between 1987 and 1991. Her PhD (Goldsmiths' College, 1996) was a study of creative performance in Iranian classical music.

Prior to joining City she taught in the Department of Performing Arts at Brunel University between 1993 and 2003, where she was Course Director for Music from 2001-2003.

Since 2007, Dr Nooshin has convened the twice yearly Middle East and Central Asia Music Forum at the Institute of Musical Research, University of London. She is on the committee of the National Association for Music in Higher Education (NAMHE) and has also served for several terms as a committee member of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology.

She regularly writes features and reviews CDs of Iranian music for Songlines: The World Music Magazine and is often contacted for advice and information on Iranian music and invited to speak about her research. Dr Nooshin has convened a number of conferences for the British Forum for Ethnomusicology and is currently on the Editorial Boards of Twentieth-century Music (Cambridge University Press) and the Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication. From 2006-9 she was a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Journal of the Royal Musical Association and between 2007 and 2011 was co-Editor of Ethnomusicology Forum.

A great believer in extending students' horizons, in June 2008 Dr Nooshin organised an educational trip to Iran for 6 students from the Centre for Music Studies at City, funded by the City University Alumni Association. (See pictures from the 2008 trip to Iran.)
