Overview
Dr Rowlands retired from City University in 2018 but retains a strong link with the university as a visiting lecturer and leader of The Magazine Business module on the MA Magazine Journalism programme. She was its course director from 1999-2018 and maintains a strong relationship with both the magazine industry and alumni.
Barbara has been a newspaper and magazine journalist for 30 years and was a leading health writer, contributing regularly to The Independent, Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Daily Mail, The Times, Observer and consumer and specialist magazines. She has worked as a writer and reporter for Agence France Presse, the Central Office of Information, Woman's Own, Australian Consolidated Press (London Bureau), and Today newspaper. She has written three books on health, plus review articles in the academic journal Journalism. She is a media trainer and consultant and has delivered workshops for government agencies, charities and NGOs.
She has a BA in Combined Studies from Leicester University, a masters in English Literature from the University of Hertfordshire and postgraduate certificate in education from the London South Bank University. She completed her PhD - The Emperor’s New Clothes: Media Representation of Complementary and Alternative Medicine: 1990-2005 – at City in 2015. She has taught journalism and been a course director at The London College of Communication, the University of Westminster and Birkbeck University. She is an Associate Professor (Education).
