Alumni in the Public Eye

A number of City University alumni have gone on to lead the field in their chosen careers. This page highlights just a few:

Brendan BarberBrendan Barber, General Secretary of Britain's Trades Union Congress (TUC ), studied BA Hons Social Sciences (1974). After graduating, Brendan took a sabbatical year as President of the City University Students Union where, among other things, he was involved in negotiations with the Greater London Council to acquire cheap housing for students near the university campus. Ruby Hammer, who studied Economics at City, is an internationally acclaimed make-up artist. From catwalk collections to fashion and beauty shoots, Ruby has created looks for the world's top photographers and most influential designers. More on Ruby Hammer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Faisal IslamFaisal Islam, who studied the Newspaper Journalism Diploma in 2004, is currently Economics Correspondant at Channel Four News. In 2000 he was presented with the Wincott Award for Young Financial Journalist of the Year in 2000, and in February 2006 was named Young Journalist of the Year at the Royal Society of Television awards. Dermot MurnaghanDermot Murnaghan, 'Sky News Today' presenter, studied a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism (1984). Dermot recently left the 'BBC Breakfast' show where he had been the main presenter since October 2002. More on Dermot Murnaghan


 

 

 

George DanielsDr George Daniels MBE, DSc, FSA 
is an English watchmaker who is famous for creating the co-axial escapement. This has been used by Omega in their highest grade watches since 1999. He is one of the few living watchmakers who can create a complete watch by hand; including the case and dial. He is a former Master of the Clockmakers' Company of London and has been awarded their Gold Medal, a rare honour. Dr Daniels studied Horology and Instrument Technology at City from 1949. Will LewisWill Lewis, who studied the Periodical Journalism Diploma at City (1991), is a journalist and editor-in-chief of the Telegraph Media Group.He was appointed editor of the Daily Telegraph on 9 October 2006, becoming the youngest ever editor of the paper. More on Will Lewis


 

 

Dick OlverDick Olver is Chairman of BAE systems, the world's 3rd largest aerospace and defence company. Dick, who studied Civil Engineering (1970) at City also sits on the Board of Directors of the Reuters News Agency. More on Dick Olver

Jo WhileyJo Whiley, BBC Radio 1 DJ, studied Radio Journalism (1996). From Feb 2001 Jo took charge of the new morning show, shifting to a 10am start.
