Strategic Learning Environment

The Learning Development Centre (LDC) is currently engaged in a number of learning and teaching related projects and supports the use of a suite of learning technologies. These projects and technologies are as follows:

Strategic Learning Environment

Our Strategic Learning Environment (SLE) project aims to enrich five core areas of activity

We are working with Schools to achieve this by introducing a suite of learning technologies for implementation throughout the institution. The focus of the SLE is not technology, but the educational experience for both staff and students.

Technology for Education

The Learning Development Centre (LDC) supports a range of learning technologies, including Moodle, Adobe Connect, Adobe Presenter, Turnitin, Pebblepad, Personal Response Systems, Pods (audio visual facilities in our lecture and seminar rooms), iTunesU, flip cameras, podcasting, and video. These technologies have different - and sometimes overlapping - functions, but all of them are designed to complement course delivery and aid communication.

We advise colleagues throughout the University on the best technologies to use, and provide guidance on how use them.  We always ensure that the improvement of the educational experience is the driving force behind the introduction of a new technology by consulting with staff on how these technologies fit into the overall design and pedagogic structure of our courses.

For experienced users of our technologies, we also run user groups in order to provide a forum to hear the experiences of other colleagues in different Schools, and to feed into the developmental process for that technology.

MILL (Media and Innovation Learning Lab

The MILL is a staff development and innovation resource, which specialises in audio and video production. It is located in E201 in the Drysdale building.

The resources include, video making and editing facilities, a TV studio, training and teaching rooms and small rooms for individual use for attending webinars, using Skype and making sound recordings e.g. for podcasts.

Learning Spaces

The Learning Spaces project is a newly-approved project, running from Autumn 2011, to look at the physical teaching and learning spaces at City University and consider the best ways of constructing our taught space in order to provide students with the best teaching and learning experience possible. During Spring 2012, there will be an opportunity to book teaching time in one of two pilot spaces, as well as chances to feed into the University's vision of what an ideal teaching space should incorporate.
