Environmental Champions

Are you interested in doing your bit to help the environment whilst helping the University? Staff and students are encouraged to join.

Environmental ChampionsWhat is the Environmental Champions Network?

It is a network of staff and student volunteers located across the University who are committed to making City a greener place to work and study.

Why do we need a network of volunteers?

Like all organisations, we have a significant impact on the environment.  Our energy consumption alone is equivalent to that of a small town.  Although we have implemented a number of energy-efficient and carbon-reduction measures and other initiatives to help improve the University's environmental performance, we still need to raise awareness amongst our students, staff and visitors.  And that's where our champions come in. Champions will be instrumental in encouraging others to change the way they interact with the environment.

How does the scheme work?

At present we have nearly 100 staff and 200 student volunteers signed up across all areas of the University.  Champions have access to free training, resources and assistance to help them raise awareness on environmental issues at City.  Plus there are loads of opportunities for champions to get involved with various environmental projects and events taking place at City.

What will be my role as Environmental Champion?

You will basically be helping to reduce the University's carbon footprint by adopting green practices within your department and schools and encouraging colleagues and students to follow suit.  You will be promoting energy efficiency, recycling, good waste management, sustainable travel and purchasing, and will assist in the distribution of energy and environmental information and advice from Property and Facilities.  As a reward for the work you do, you'll be earning Eco Points which will go towards special prizes at the end of the academic year.

How much work is involved?

Although the role is an important one for the University, we don't want to burden anyone with too much additional work. We estimate that champions will not be required to undertake more than a one or two hours a month either attending network meetings or training, or helping to promote greener practices within your department or school.

What resources will be available to me?

A promotional campaign called The Point has been developed and will be used in a number of responsible ways from posters and leaflets to other eco friendly publicity material. Free ongoing training will be provided to all volunteers and there will also be assistance and help via the University's Environment Team.  Update meetings and social events will be held at least once per term in order to network, share ideas and celebrate everyone's efforts.

What are the benefits for me?

In addition to helping the University reduce its carbon footprint and improve its environmental performance, you'll also be gaining valuable skills that will benefit you in the future (all of which will look good on your CV!), not to mention the sense of pride you'll feel at doing your part to help save the planet.

How do I sign up?
